Grade 440c Rectangular Bar is not easily weldable because it is very easily air hardened. In order to weld this alloy, the ASTM A276 Type 440C Bar  should be preheated to a temperature of 260°C. For the post welding treatment, the alloy is to be heated  between the temperature range of 732 °C -760°C for 6 hours. Following welding, the ASTM A276 Type 440C Bar is slowly cooled in the furnace itself to prevent cracking.

In order to Hot Work the 440c Stainless Steel Flat Bar it is pre-heated to a temperature of  760°C . The Temperature during hot working can gradually be increased up to a range of 1038°C - 1204°C. The 440c Stainless Steel Flat Bar must not be heated below 927°C. the alloy can then be slowly cooled at room temperature and fully annealed. Grade ASTM A276 Type 440C Bar is slightly cold workable using common cold working techniques.

Annealing the ASTM A276 Type 440C Bar can be performed between the temperature ranges of  843-871°C  followed by slowly cooling in the furnace.Grade 440c Stainless Steel Flat Bar can be tempered by soaking  the alloy at 148°C .Hardening the 440c Stainless Steel Rod can be done by heating  the alloy at 760°C. Similar to the hot working process, the temperature during hardening can be increased up to 1010°C followed by cooling in air or  cooling in oil.

Stainless steel 440C, also known as UNS S44004, principal elements are .95% to 1.2% carbon, 16% to 18% chromium, .75% nickel, with traces of manganese, silicon, copper, molybdenum, phosphorus and sulfur. Grade 440C is a high carbon martensitic stainless with moderate corrosion resistance good strength, and the ability to obtain and hold excellent hardness (Rc 60) and wear resistance. It is considered to be slightly cold workable by common practices and does respond to heat treatment.
